This article has been in my draft bin since Saturday. Just don’t have the time to finalize it because I really got busy with work and family. V-day is finally here and I can see its traces on the quotes posted in the hallway of our office. Here are a few of them I have collated out of the thousand sayings that talk about the heart and how it beats for the one we love.
A memory is a photograph taken by the heart to make a special moment last forever….Unknown.
Let your heart guide you. It whispers, so listen closely….Land Before Time.
Sometimes someone says something really small, and it just fits right into this empty place in your heart….My So-Called Life.
You may hold my hand for a while, but you hold my heart forever….Unknown.
The heart in pursuit of oneness will find the most inexplicable beauty….Unknown.
A part of you has grown in me. And so you see, it’s you and me together forever and never apart, maybe in distance, but never in heart….Brooke Zuroweste.
As I was waiting for the elevator, I saw one poster that talks about the blood pumping unit that supplies oxygen and blood to the whole part of the body. Oppositely, people around me took less notice to it. Albeit a heart is an emblem of love, it’s also a vital channel needed by every person to survive — an organ most heart-healthy people take for granted.
Eating, drinking and merry-making were what most of us did during Valentine Day. Many of the compelling favorites during this day include truckloads of sugar, fat and salt. Unknowing that excessive to any of these in our food could lead to the alleged lifestyle morbidity. For more than twenty years now, diseases of the heart persist to be the pilot of death among people all over the world. Cardiovascular diseases refer to ailment of the heart and blood vessels due to hardening of the arteries and medical attention is required at once if warning signs are experienced by an individual. Its symptom can be diverse basing on which area of the ‘cardiovascular system’ is affected. If the involvement is the coronary arteries which are the blood vessels that supply the heart, these can lead to angina or chest pain. The chest pain is typically precipitated by effort, physical or emotional stress and may radiate to the left arm or jaw. If the involvements are the arteries of the lower extremities, it may be apparent as pain on walking at a certain distance or speed.
But this attack does not happen overnight as particular risk behaviors leads to it. And following our hearty celebration, I hope we are also reminded that an unhealthy diet is one of the most important determinants along with physical inactivity and smoking. Concurrently, other controllable risk factors include hypertension, diabetes mellitus and obesity. Both genders are prone to developing it. Post-menopausal women are similarly susceptible when the protective effect of estrogen is lost. Alarmingly, many young patients in their 30s or younger also develop CVD due to changing lifestyle, diet and the increasing prevalence of risk factors earlier mentioned.
I hope everyone is taking this day literally a heart day, a time to examine and remember how we treat this source of life organ for the past year. We can start bringing about simple, achievable and practical actions to get it back in shape. Stop smoking, occupy oneself in bodily actions for at least 30 minutes most days of the week, keep an fitting body weight, boosting our consumption of fruits and vegetables, and cut off on salty, fatty and sweet food. And as we return to the regular corporate grind, we can aim to take charge of our work in a way that we will be productive and happy instead of being all stressed out. We are as well urged to regularly follow up with our doctors so that risk factors and response to treatment can be assessed and monitored. I am sure that all our discipline to take care of our heart will be very worth it. Moreover, our heart has never ceased doing its job since the time it started beating. It is about right to return the favor by taking good care of our heart.
